Masia de la Roqua is a family winery situated in Olivella, right in the middle of the Massís del Garraf (“massís describes an irregular chain of mountains”). The estate dates back to the XII century and is currently managed by the latest generation of the family, Jot Camps.
The Massís del Garraf is a mountainous range between Barcelona and Tarragona. To the north, it limits with L’Ordal mountain chain and, to the south, with the Mediterranean sea. The mountains, often higher than 500m above the sea level, are calcareous and have a great number of holes and caves. Several small torrents and streams flow in between. It is within this landscape that lay their vines.
Many plots are in direct contact with the forest, fostering the interaction between each other and contributing to the great biodiversity we find in the property. In addition, none of the vineyards are contiguous with those of other producers. That allows management of the vineyards under strict organic and biodynamic techniques.
The objective of Masia de la Roqua is to grow wines that identify themselves with the land, that reflect their particular location; for example, in the Massís del Garraf, with a singular soil and a distinct climatology, the influence of the Mediterranean sea, the forest, the vegetation… all in all, that express a differentiated terroir.
The vineyard house dates back to 1164, the cellar was named in 1549, and wine growing began in 1678. The Mediterranean climate makes the area ideal for growing olive trees, almond trees, and vines. The winemaker Jot Camps comes from a lineage of vintners. He was taught how to work with vines by his father before finishing Oenology in Barcelona and moving to France to further his wine education. He specializes in producing small batches of clean and complex artisanal natural wines for all budgets.
